Construction String-line Profile
From concept to market in 3 months
String-line Guide
Client: A builder turned construction start-up with a vision to improve efficiency and accuracy when laying bricks. The system introduces a rail-based solution that replaces traditional string line setups, allowing bricklayers to quickly and reliably position their guide line as a build progresses. We worked with the client to develop the concept into a robust, practical product suited to on-site conditions.
Approach: We led the design and development of the rail system, focusing on durability, ease of use and adaptability to typical building environments. Early stages explored mounting methods, adjustability, and interaction to ensure the system could be installed quickly and operated with minimal disruption. Iterative prototyping, alongside close collaboration with manufacturing partners, informed refinements to usability, cost efficiency and overall product quality.
Challenges: The challenge was to improve upon a well-established but inefficient method without adding complexity. The product needed to securely hold a string line under tension while allowing quick vertical adjustment as each course of bricks was completed. It also had to withstand harsh site conditions and repeated use, while remaining simple and intuitive for tradespeople.
Deliverables: We delivered a complete design for manufacture, including robust component detailing and production-ready specifications. Multiple prototype iterations were developed and tested, ensuring the final solution was both cost-effective and capable of reliable, high-quality production.
Impact: The result is a durable and efficient system that streamlines the process of setting and adjusting string lines. By reducing setup time, eliminating damage to finished work and improving reliability, the solution enhances productivity on site and offers a practical advancement over traditional methods.
“Working with a start-up who had defined a real-world need in the construction industry to increase efficiency and reduce the cost of a build was an exciting project. We navigated the client through the complexities of innovation, product development and manufacture to successful trade launch.”
