Baby Rocker
Startup to 1 million units manufactured
Rockit
Client: Rockit began with a simple but universal challenge: helping infants stay asleep when a pram stops moving. The founders had a clear vision for a portable, gentle rocking device but needed specialist support to transform an early concept into a commercially viable product. With our experience in design-for-manufacture and our record with early-stage innovation programmes, we were brought in to guide the product from concept to launch.
Approach: We began by defining the essential requirements: quiet operation, adjustable intensity, strong battery performance, and absolute safety. With clarity on the brief, we worked backwards from target unit costs to define an approach grounded in real-world manufacturing constraints.
Challenges: Creating a compact mechanism capable of consistently replicating the natural rocking motion, while remaining robust, showerproof, and safe for newborns. This required multiple prototypes and iterative engineering with each cycle refining performance, reliability, and ease of assembly.
Deliverables: Our team delivered full industrial design, engineering development, proof-of-concept testing, regulatory compliance support, and complete design-for-manufacture guidance, ensuring the product was ready for scalable production.
Impact: Rockit rapidly became a global nursery-sector success: more than one million units sold, distribution across 38 countries, international patent protection, widespread 5-star reviews, and recognition including the Queen’s Award for Enterprise.
“The team at Pd-m took our original concept then carried out product development, in-house prototyping, engineering and design for manufacture. The team at Pd-m are highly focused, experienced and dedicated; they have really helped us in our journey to market.”
