Sustainability Strategy

Leveraging sustainability for commercial advantage

Pennine Healthcare

Client: Pennine Healthcare is a medical device contract manufacturer with a mission to embed sustainability as a strategic pillar to drive operational, product and supply chain transformation.

Approach: We developed a full-scope Carbon Reduction Plan, extending beyond NHS requirements to include comprehensive Scope 3 screening. The analysis showed 94% of emissions sat in Scope 3, with 77% linked to raw materials and finished goods. An Innovate to Zero workshop aligned operations, regulatory, supply chain and commercial teams to prioritise high-impact opportunities across materials, packaging and logistics. Quick wins included packaging redesign delivering a 14.5% product carbon reduction, alongside PVC-free transitions, supply chain optimisation and FEA-led lightweighting reducing carbon and cost in tandem.

Challenges: Turning carbon data into commercial action required cross-functional alignment, upstream client influence, material validation, and maintaining regulatory compliance, performance and cost competitiveness.

Deliverables: Carbon Reduction Plan and Scope 3 screening, innovation workshop and prioritised roadmap, packaging carbon analysis, supply chain optimisation review and carbon and cost modelling.

Impact: Pennine Healthcare achieved corporate and product-level emissions insight and a practical decarbonisation pathway that delivered measurable returns. This enabled over £80,000 of operational and £317,000 annual material savings, supporting a credible lower-carbon product positioning.

We engaged Pd-m to help us with completing our Carbon Reduction Plan which was not only a requirement for an NHS tender, but part of a wider strategy to have sustainability at the core of our business. The team at Pd-m quickly and efficiently guided us through the process and delivered the report in around three weeks.
