Internship (Product Designer)

About the job

We are looking for a Product Design Intern to gain insight and experience to create, develop and deliver innovations from concept to manufacture. Working closely with the team you will be involved in all aspects of the product design and commercialisation process.

Main responsibilities, working under the supervision of the team

  • Desk based research and insight.

  • Creation of design brief and outline product specifications.

  • Formulating design aesthetics via the creation of mood boards and sketching.

  • Brainstorming, concept generation and development.

  • Storyboarding useability and consumer journeys.

  • Insight with focus groups.

  • Creation and development of 3D CAD models, competence dependent.

  • Prototyping and testing.

  • Insight to design for manufacture.

  • Awareness of working within ISO 9001 quality management systems.

About you

You will be studying for a Degree in Product or Industrial Design, preferably as part of a year-long placement or over the Summer. You will have created a strong portfolio which demonstrates the ability to approach problem solving in a methodical, strategic way. To be successful in this Internship you will need the following essential skills:

  • Being an innovative, inquisitive and creative thinker.

  • Excellent spatial awareness and the ability to communicate visually by hand sketching.

  • Proficiency in Solidworks CAD, KeyShot, adobe, word, excel, powerpoint, Miro and project management software.

  • Insight of manufacturing principles including injection moulding, extrusion, vacuum forming, extrusion and fabrication.

  • Being technology, technically and engineering inquisitive.

  • Some knowledge of materials and selection processes.

  • Self-motivated, able to plan and prepare.

  • Organised and work to systems.

  • Clear and confident when presenting.

  • Articulating a vision and persuasive communication skills.

  • Able to work on your own under supervision, and as part of a team.

  • An acute attention to detail and focus on high-quality outputs.

Desirable skills we are also looking for are

  • Knowledge of user/human centred/interaction design.

  • Some knowledge of electronics.

  • An awareness for circular economy principles and the environmental agenda.

  • An awareness of intellectual property.

Package

The internship is paid, salary dependent on skills and knowledge.

Location and working hours

The HQ is in Thirsk, North Yorkshire and we also have space in Leeds. Hours are 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday.
